GD Economics staff led a Health Canada study looking into the planning responses to the increasing problem of extreme heat in urban environments. Extreme heat events are becoming a growing health risk for individuals and communities across Canada. Climate change, in combination with the urban heat island effect, is expected to exacerbate current warming trends in urban areas, and bring about an increase in the frequency, duration and intensity of extreme heat events such as heat waves. GD Economics studied to what extent the issue is a priority for planners and whether it explicitly enters into the planning process (i.e., through the development approval process, urban design, community services planning and planning policy). The study also looked at how the planning process can address the need to mitigate and reduce the intensity of heat to minimize potential negative impacts on human health.
